Raila Odinga is a well known Democracy champion in Kenya and beyond but lately he has been chidding young MPs like Ababu Namwamba and Isaac Ruto for championing an official Opposition to check the Grand Coalition in Parliament. I think power is getting into Raila's head! for the sake of our nascent democracy we need an opposition and a strong one made of younger politicians like Ababu.
Raila must take cue from what James Orengo said when asked for his views about Grand Opposition. According to Orengo, the issue of Grand Opposition must be discussed and agreed upon within the respective parties and noted debated at homecoming parties like Raila tried last weekend in Kisumu and Bondo!.
It is critical for any establishment to be checked, this is a tenet of any democracy worth its name and the fac t that we are through a national healing process does not give any politcal head- be it the president or the premier- a blank cheque in national issues and accountability.
It is worthnoting that other ODM bigwigs-the so called Pentagon has been silent on this issue.
Raila must also remember that leaders like Ababu are young and they are the Premiers and Presidents after 2012 as such they have to sort of build their profiles just as Raila did by opposing the Moi and Kibaki establishments.
For the sake of democratic sanity in this country we need an Opposition and i do agree with Namwamba and group on this. Lets not forget that these are elected and nominated Mps with peoples mandate.
